Bio: Whether it’s the weekly phone call or email reminder, Matt Cormier ends all his communication with “Lucky Principal of Wilmot Elementary.” This tagline resonates with parents because they see firsthand how Matt loves this community and makes thoughtful strategic decisions to see it thrive. Under Matt’s leadership, and as a strong communicator, parent/teacher relationships are among the best in the district according to survey data. And, with a 97% approval rating, teachers surveys reflect their positive experience working at Wilmot, a place most of them call “home.” This staff rating is a direct reflection of Matt’s style of shared leadership that allows teachers to grow professionally. Matt became a Principal to serve his community and to help teachers achieve great things by instilling confidence in their abilities.

Having bounced around as a child, Matt attended 8 different elementary schools including in England and upstate New York. He then split his high school years in Ohio and Virginia. Between his undergraduate and graduate studies he attended Virginia Tech, University of Central Oklahoma, George Washington University and the University of Colorado, Denver. Matt became part of the JeffCo school district in 2001 as a geography teacher, then took on various roles including technology teacher, assistant principal, principal and finally found himself as a central based administrator. During that time he won the Jeffco District Value award for integrity multiple times, a reflection of his character believing integrity is the most important value a person can display.

Before Matt became principal of Wilmot Elementary, it was a Kindergarten teacher who convinced him that Wilmot was a special place where his son would thrive. That’s the instance when Matt’s family became part of the Wilmot community and when he knew he wanted to be part of the staff. In 2014 he secured the position of principal, and has since led with passion and dedication. Matt lives in Evergreen with his wife and two children. His hobbies include woodworking, fishing, playing the Ukulele and cheering on Liverpool. When asked what people who are thinking of coming to Wilmot should know, Matt says, “Wilmot is a school where all students feel connected and engaged, empowered and equipped to reach further than the limits that they or others have set for themselves.”
