Social Emotional Learning
At Wilmot Elementary, we believe our students should learn social-emotional skills alongside academic skills. We use the Second Step curriculum to teach these skills.
This universal, classroom-based curriculum uses developmentally appropriate best practices to guide students in developing and practicing their ability to self-regulate, recognize and manage their emotions, problem-solve and increase their social communication skills.
Extensive research shows a high correlation between the systemic teaching of social-emotional skills and increasing levels of academic achievement and assessment scores.
In addition to the instruction provided to all students at school, HomeLinks are provided so families know what is being taught and how to reinforce these concepts and skills at home.
- Integrate Second Step lessons into prekindergarten to fifth-grade classrooms once a week.
- Nurture the Wilmot community by using the Creating Relationships and Educational Well-being (CREW) model
- CREW fosters meaningful classroom connections with students in other grades and with other caring adults in the building.
- Prepare Jeffco students for academic success and social-emotional well-being
- Ensuring students feel a sense of belonging in their classroom and school community

What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which students and adults gain and apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to deal effectively with daily tasks and challenges.
Jeffco has adopted the five core competencies of SEL outlined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL).
- Self-Awareness
- Self-Management
- Social Awareness
- Relationship Skills
- Responsible Decision-Making (CASEL, 2020)
SEL happens in safe and supportive school, family and community environments that support development and provide opportunities and recognition for successfully applying skills.
