Ronan Tanner loves geography.

Not only is the fifth-grader writing a book on the subject, but he’s won the Wilmot Elementary School Geography Bee two years in a row. This year, he passed the test and will be one of 100 fourth- through eighth-graders participating in the Colorado Geography Bee on March 31 at the University of Denver.

The winner of the state bee will participate in the national Geography Bee in Washington D.C. The finals will be televised May 19 on the National Geographic Channel.

“He’s passionate, and one thing that I’m learning is when you have passionate and committed kids, they can reach their goals,” principal Matt Cormier said.

“He has been studying and practicing for a long while. He set a goal to make it to the state bee, and he did it.”

Ronan said he was excited and nervous about participating in the state bee, and he studies two to four hours a day by reading books, going through flashcards and visiting the National Geographic website.

His family goes on many road trips, and he’s already visited 40 states, which helped kindle his love for geography.

While he wants to be an architect, Ronan says he still plans to study geography.

“I get to learn about people and how they experience the world,” Ronan said.
